SF, I had a female dog (a boxer) who did that. We figured she learned it from her brother and mimicked him. Unfortunately (?), she grew to be larger than he was, and she used to hump him, much to the amusement of everyone.
Oh, and both dogs were "fixed", not that either imagined they were broken in the first place ;-).

A perfect illustration of Reason #2 in why we only get female dogs.
Now, Sassy, female dogs of the alpha variety are just as capable of that behavior.
Now at least we know what we should chip in and get Wen for Christmas. :)
